Internist (infectious diseases and acute medicine) | Amsterdam UMC

A. Professor Edgar J.G. Peters started medical school at VU University Medical Center, Amsterdam, The Netherlands in 1993. He has worked in 1997 and 1998 as a researcher at the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio, Texas, USA. He graduated medical school of VU University Medical Center in Amsterdam in 2000 cum laude. In 2002, he finished a PhD thesis on diabetic foot complications and started a traineeship internal medicine at Leiden University Medical Center in Leiden, The Netherlands. He registered as an internist in 2007. He is also dually registered in both Infectious Diseases and Acute Medicine.

He currently works as Internist, Infectious Diseases and Acute Medicine Specialist at Amsterdam University Medical Centers, where he is the director of the Infectious Diseases Fellowship Program. His main research interest is infections of the musculoskeletal system, especially diabetes-related foot infections and bone infection. Recent research projects were to the microbiome of diabetes-related foot bone infection (osteomyelitis), monitoring treatment of osteomyelitis with biomarkers, cold atmospheric plasma treatment of diabetes-related foot ulcers, and diagnostic strategies for diabetic foot osteomyelitis. He has combined diabetes-related foot research with research to other musculoskeletal infections, e.g., prosthetic joint prosthesis associated infection. He has also been involved in writing guidelines for treatment of diabetes-related foot complications for the Infectious Diseases Society of America, the Wound Healing Society, the European Wound Management Association, the International Working Group on the Diabetic Foot and the Dutch Internist Society (NIV). He also chairs the Dutch guideline committee for prosthetic joint associated infections. He is the Scientific Secretary of the International Symposium on the Diabetic Foot. Edgar Peters has authored over 100 journal articles and books chapters. He was also a member of the 2023 IWGDF Infection Guideline working group.

Vascular surgeon | Helsinki University Hospital

Maarit Venermo is professor of vascular surgery and head of the department in Helsinki University Hospital and University of Helsinki in Finland. She is the Secretary General of the European Society for Vascular Surgery. Since 2014, she has been the holding the only chair of full professor in vascular surgery in Finland. She has altogether 300 original publications, review papers and book chapters. She had supervised 14 completed PhD thesis and has 7 ongoing PhD students. Her group from Helsinki is in the VASCUL-AID project. Her main areas of interest in research work has been chronic limb threatening ischemia, evaluation of perfusion and angiosome concept in chronic limb ischemia, hybrid room radiation safety, population based AAA studies as well as treatment of ruptured aneurysm. She has been active in VASCUNET collaboration and ICVR. She has also been active in different societies and served as president of Finnish Society for Vascular Surgery during 2004-2008, and the board of Finnish Society of Angiology 2019-ongoing. She has also been very active in different national and international guidelines and participated writing groups of several guidelines and is now ESVS chair in the updating project for Global Guidelines for the Treatment of CLTI and she is also a member of the 2023 IWGDF PAD guidelines working group.

Professor of Secure Health Technologies | Lancaster University

Neil Reeves is Professor of Secure Health Technologies based in the Medical School at Lancaster University. His research is focused on digital health technologies and cyber security. He has a strong track-record of research with digital medical devices, particularly in diabetes where he led the first proof-of-concept clinical trial showing the efficacy of smart pressure-sensing insoles for diabetic foot ulcer prevention, published in the Lancet Digital Health. Neil also led one of the first clinical trials showing the efficacy of vibrating insoles for improving gait and balance published in Diabetes Care.

Neil is currently leading the EPSRC-funded ‘Socksess’ project developing smart-sensing socks for diabetes-related foot ulcer prevention. He co-developed (with Prof. Moi Hoon Yap) a novel Artificial Intelligence-driven mobile app (FootSnap-AI) for diabetic foot screening and monitoring and won the Oracle Innovator Accelerator Grant to scale-up and translate this towards clinical practice with industry partners.

Neil has led externally funded research supported by UK and international funding bodies including the National Institutes of Health (USA), EPSRC and Diabetes UK. He works across the health technology sector with medical technology companies to progress health solutions and sits on scientific committees including EPSRC’s Healthcare Technology strategic advisory team, Innovate UK’s Innovation Accelerator and Medical Charity Scientific Committees (Great Foundations).

He is on the Editorial Board for several journals and serves an expert assessor and Scientific committee panel member for major UK and international funding bodies. He has published ~170 papers in international peer-reviewed journals (ORCID: 0000-0001-9213-4580) and has an ‘H-Index’ of 50 (Scopus).

A/Prof. Spiros Fourlanos MBBS, FRACP, PhD is Director of the Royal Melbourne Hospital (RMH) Department of Diabetes and Endocrinology and honorary Associate Clinical Professor with the University of Melbourne. He obtained his medical and PhD degrees at the University of Melbourne. His doctoral thesis was performed at the Walter & Eliza Hall Institute on ‘Latent Autoimmune Diabetes in Adults (LADA): New Clinical, Immunogenetic and Metabolic Perspectives’. Spiros is an author of over 160 peer-reviewed publications and is currently a co-stream lead in the University of Melbourne Australian Centre for Accelerating Diabetes Innovations (ACADI) collaborative. He is the Principal Investigator for ACADI Project 2A investigating a novel mitochondrial-based combination therapy for painful peripheral neuropathy and ACADI Project 3A focusing on inpatient diabetes care. Spiros has channeled his energy in to the problem of diabetes in the acute care setting and performed RAPIDS and STOIC-D Surgery, the largest whole of hospital randomised trials globally in people with diabetes. To date he has been an investigator in over 35 clinical trials (investigator-driven and industry sponsored). Spiros also served as a previous a board member and honorary treasurer of the Australian Diabetes Society.

Dr Melanie Burkhardt is a clinical psychologist, working within the multidisciplinary diabetes teams at Fiona Stanley, and Royal Perth Hospitals in Western Australia. Her longstanding interests in improving the care of people with complex diabetes and complications has led her to develop an embedded clinical service, and an applied research program focusing on translating and evaluating evidence-based behavioural interventions aiming to improve condition self-management, and behavioural and clinical outcomes.

Associate Professor Michael Woodward is Head of Dementia Research and a senior clinician at the Wound Management Clinic at Austin Health in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. He is a past President and is honoured to be a Fellow of the Australian Wound Management Association, now Wounds Australia, on which he served as an inaugural Board Member. He leads several research trials investigating new therapies for chronic wounds. Associate Professor Woodward’s publication record includes 160 peer reviewed research papers, numerous book chapters and over 500 scholarly addresses. He was joint editor of Wound Practice and Research, the journal of Wounds Australia, for 16 years. He is also a member of the Repatriation Pharmaceutical Reference Committee, which approves drugs and dressings for Australian Veterans, and chairs their Advisory Wound Care Committee.

He is a Fellow of the Australian and New Zealand Society for Geriatric Medicine and is a previous chair of their Education and Training Subcommittee. He is also a Fellow of the Australian Association of Gerontology, having previously been President of their Victorian Division. He Chairs the Accreditation Subcommittee of the Royal Australasian College of Physician, responsible for accrediting training sites and programs for physician trainees across Australia. On Australia Day 2016 Michael was honoured to receive Membership of the Order of Australia for his work in geriatric medicine and as a researcher and author.

Kim Whiteley is a distinguished Indigenous leader, renowned for her impactful contributions and strategic vision. Born in Wellington on Wiradjuri country and a descendent of the Warramunga clan group families from the Bogan River in Central West NSW, Kim has dedicated her career to advancing the well-being of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.

Kim has navigated complexities related to rural, remote, and regional service delivery with a focus on addressing disparities and improving outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and communities. Her extensive portfolio spans across healthcare, workforce, education, justice and Aboriginal Land Rights, reflecting a holistic breadth of commitment to First Nation well-being.

She was elected as the inaugural Co-Chair for the Department of Health, Agency of Clinical Innovation Aboriginal Chronic Conditions Network. Kim served as a former Commonwealth NSW/ACT PHN Aboriginal Network Chair and on various local and regional hospital boards and has represented NSW Department of Communities and Justice Aboriginal staff throughout her esteemed career. Beyond her professional achievements, Kim is revered for her unwavering dedication to enhancing Aboriginal community controlled strategy and empowering others. Her visionary leadership continues to drive positive change, making her a pivotal figure in the pursuit of equitable outcomes and community well-being.

A.Professor Pete Lazzarini is a conjoint Principal Research Fellow at Metro North Hospital & Health Service and Queensland University of Technology in Brisbane, Australia. He is a podiatrist by background and founded Australia's first diabetes foot disease research program.

Pete has an internationally-recognised track record in diabetes foot disease research, having delivered >100 peer-reviewed papers, >70 other research publications (abstracts, reports, guidelines, book chapters), >130 international conference presentations and attracted >$5.8 million in grant funding. He has served on many international diabetes foot disease committees, including Past Chair of Diabetes Feet Australia and Secretary of the International Working Group on the Diabetic Foot Offloading Guideline, and he currently holds a National Health and Medical Research Council Early Career Fellowship.

Pete leads a small team that is producing paradigm changing new knowledge and health impacts in three main diabetes foot disease areas: developing novel foot treatments, identifying key risk factors, and quantifying disease burdens. His team's vision is to create transformative new knowledge on patient, treatment, and service factors that improve foot disease outcomes and compel clinicians, researchers, and policy-makers to reduce the significant diabetes burdens faced by patients and nations.

Dr. Michelle Kaminski is the Podiatry Research Lead at Monash Health with over 15 years of clinical and research experience in the prevention and management of high-risk foot conditions. Additionally, Michelle is an Adjunct Lecturer at La Trobe University and an Adjunct Senior Research Fellow at Monash University and has successfully led several large-scale research projects across the public health and academic sectors. Her work has directly influenced models of care and service delivery, particularly in the area of renal foot disease and diabetes-related foot disease. Michelle is dedicated to embedding research into clinical practice and mentoring the next generation of clinician-researchers, currently supervising one PhD student and 22 Industry Honours podiatry students in the academic sector and 18 clinician-researchers in the public health sector. A strong advocate for translational research, Michelle was a key contributor to the Australian guidelines for diabetes-related foot disease, serving as secretary and first author of the Prevention Guideline. Michelle has also recently joined the international panel for the 2027 iteration of the International Working Group on the Diabetic Foot (IWGDF) Offloading Guideline.

Dr Brian Martin is a specialist orthopaedic surgeon whose mixed adult and paediatric practice provides expert treatment on conditions including: disorders of the foot and ankles; paediatric orthopaedics (lower limb); neuromuscular orthopaedics (in particular cerebral palsy) and lower limb treatment.

Having completed his medical degree at the University of Queensland in 2001, Dr Brian Martin undertook his internship and Basic Surgical Training at The Royal Brisbane Hospital and the Mater Hospital in Brisbane. He completed his orthopaedic training in Sydney before successfully passing his Orthopaedic Fellowship exam in 2009. For the following 12 months, Dr Martin participated in further subspecialty training in paediatric orthopaedics at The Children’s Hospital at Westmead and The Royal Children’s Hospital in Melbourne. In addition, he completed training in adult Foot and Ankle Surgery at Southmead and Frenchay Hospital in Bristol (UK).

Since completing his subspecialty fellowship training and returning to Australia in 2011, Dr Martin has been appointed as a VMO at Nepean Public Hospital and previously the Children's Hospital at Westmead where he was also the Director of Orthopaedic Training. He maintains an honorary appointment at the Children's Hospital at Westmead. Alongside his position at these 2 hospitals, he offers consultations in his rooms and also operates at the Nepean Private Hospital, Sydney Adventist Hospital and the Norwest Private Hospital.

Dr Pam Chen is a podiatrist and early career researcher specialising in diabetes-related foot disease. Having completed her PhD at UTAS, which focused on health literacy and improving diabetes-related foot ulcer prevention, she returned to WA for new challenges.

Pam is a senior podiatrist at Fiona Stanley Hospital, which is an NADC accredited Centre of Excellence High Risk Foot Service. Pam was the national President of the Advanced Practicing Podiatrists – High Risk Foot Group in Australia between 2017 and 2023 and sits on a number of committees and networks relating to diabetic foot disease nationally. She is passionate about translational research and evidence-based practice, was involved with the 2021 Australian evidence-based guidelines for diabetes-related foot disease as Secretary of the Wound Healing chapter. Pam is also part of the International Working Group of the Diabetic Foot, serving scientific Secretary on the Wound Healing chapter.

Outside of work Pam enjoys a good gin, is usually at her local CrossFit “box” or on a bike training for the next competition, and is owned by a number of rescue cats.

Professor Stephen M. Twigg, MBBS(Hons-I), PhD, FRACP, is a physician-scientist translational researcher, Kellion Professor of Endocrinology and Stan Clark Chair in Diabetes, in the Sydney Medical School, and Charles Perkins Centre, the University of Sydney; plus Head of Dept of Endocrinology and Medical Head of the Diabetes and Endocrinology Research Laboratories, Royal Prince Alfred Hospital Sydney.

Stephen also continues as medical Chair of the NSW DoH Agency for Clinical Innovation in Diabetes/Endocrinology (2011+), and as inaugural Editor-in-Chief of the educational journal, Endocrinology Today, plus an editorial Board member on the scientific Journal of Cell Communication and Signaling, and the Journal of Diabetes and its Complications. He is member of 4 national Pharma advisory boards in diabetes. Internationally, he has served on JDRFI Diabetes Research Complications Grant Panel in NY 2003-2010, and is 1 of 6 Australian Delegates to the International Diabetes Federation General Assembly (2011-present).

Dr Vivienne Chuter is a Professor at Western Sydney University. She leads a clinically based research program focusing on prevention and management of diabetes-related foot disease for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and for non-Indigenous Australians. Developed as a living lab model encompassing clinical, research and education elements, Vivienne’s research focuses on macro and microvascular complications of diabetes, including improving diagnosis of peripheral artery disease through more targeted clinical testing, as well as reducing risk of foot complications through conservative therapy and physical activity interventions.

Committed to improving health and well-being for First Nations Australians, Vivienne provides academic leadership and clinical service provision to co-designed, community-led diabetes-related foot complications prevention and management services and research. This includes research relating to development and implementation of culturally safe care provision and strategies to develop cultural capability in new graduate practitioners.

Professor Fitridge has been a vascular surgeon for 30 years, and Professor of Vascular Surgery at the University of Adelaide since 2010. His outstanding career of professional leadership includes several chair positions of medical boards and he was also president of the World Federation of Vascular Societies.

Rob is a senior editor for the medical text Mechanisms of Vascular Disease and leads the surgical education for the next generation of vascular specialists in Australia. Prof Fitridge's contributions to the field of vascular surgery extend beyond his clinical practice. He has been actively involved in teaching and research, sharing his insights and expertise with the next generation of medical professionals. His dedication to advancing medical knowledge has led to numerous publications in esteemed journals. As a leading vascular surgeon, Prof Fitridge is affiliated with various professional organizations. He maintains active membership with the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons, which reflects his commitment to upholding the highest standards of surgical practice.

Dr Emma Hamilton is an Endocrinologist at Fiona Stanley and Fremantle Hospitals, Clinical Senior Lecturer at UWA and Clinical Lead of the Multidisciplinary Diabetes Foot Unit at Fiona Stanley Hospital, an NADC accredited Centre of Excellence High Risk Foot Service. Emma completed her Endocrinology training in Western Australia before moving to Melbourne to complete a PhD “Control of Musculoskeletal Function and Body Composition by Androgens in Males” under the supervision of Professor Jeffrey Zajac and Dr Mathis Grossmann at the University of Melbourne, Austin Health.

Since returning to WA, Emma continues to pursue her clinical and research interests in androgens, diabetes, osteoporosis and diabetes-related foot complications as well as a long term research collaboration with Professor Tim Davis and the Fremantle Diabetes Study team. Aligning her research priorities with her clinical work, Emma was awarded a Raine Clinician Research Fellowship to further her research in diabetes-related foot disease, with the aim of improving outcomes for people living with diabetes and foot complications. Emma serves on a number of national diabetes-related foot disease projects and committees including the NADC Diabetic Foot Network working party, NADC interdisciplinary High Risk Foot Service accreditation committee, the Foot Forward Executive Advisory team, the DFA Australian Research Priorities project, DFA Australian guidelines Wound Classification group and is also a member of the IWGDF Wound Classification guideline group.

Laurens Manning (BSc, MBChB, DTM&H (London), FRACP, PhD) is an infectious disease physician and clinical researcher at Fiona Stanley Hospital (FSH), University of Western Australia and Telethon Kids Institute. An active ‘foot’ physician, he has developed the MDFU in-patient and outpatient services at FSH. He has a diverse research portfolio that includes design and implementation of clinical trials in diabetic foot infections, penicillin reformulation for rheumatic heart disease, peri-prosthetic joint infections and epidemiological studies of lower leg cellulitis in Australia. Elsewhere he leads clinical trials, observational and pharmacological studies in young PNG children with malaria and severe infections. In addition to a strong track record in research activities, he has extensive links with global health community, in particular as a researcher, teacher, external examiner and clinician in PNG. His role as an opinion leader is evidenced by his role in formulating national guidelines, drawing directly on his own research as in the case of writing the PNG Standard Adult Treatment Guidelines and in distilling and interpreting the literature for Therapeutic Guidelines Expert Writing Groups (Antibiotics/Dermatology). He has been appointed to the ASID Clinical Research Network steering group to facilitate collaborative studies in infectious diseases across Australia and New Zealand and the TGA advisory committee for biologicals which is creating the regulatory framework for faecal transplantation.

He has published a total of 90 papers in the past 10 years and 8 book chapters, supervises 4 PhD students and been the recipient of >$5M in tier 1 grants in the last 5 years including an MRFF Emerging Leadership Fellowship (2021-25).

John Chen is a podiatrist with a passion for improving diabetes-related foot disease outcomes for people living in regional and rural Australia. He is appointed as a Specialist Podiatrist at Latrobe Community Health Service in Gippsland and is the clinical lead and founding member of the Gippsland interdisciplinary High Risk Foot Service, which is a National Association of Diabetes Centres (NADC) core-level accredited service between Latrobe Community Health Service and Latrobe Regional Health.

After completing his basic training in 2018 at La Trobe University, Melbourne, he moved abroad and worked as a podiatrist at the National University Hospital, Singapore, from 2019 to 2022. Upon returning to Australia, he co-founded a novel collaborative high risk foot service in Gippsland working closely with his colleagues Dr Scott McNeil (Endocrinologist) and Ms Alison Lang (Wound Clinical Nurse Consultant) to establish the service. In 2023, the Gippsland High Risk Foot Service won the health category at the Gippsland Primary Health Awards and in that same year, John was the recipient of the ‘Dr Ian Griffiths Best Oral Abstract’ award at the Diabetes Feet Australia conference for showcasing the power of collaborative care and the efforts of his team.

Through active engagement in research, he frequently presents at national conferences. In 2024, he was an invited speaker at the 20^th Asia Pacific Association for Diabetic Limb Problems conference in Singapore. In 2025, John completed his Masters Theory of Podiatric Surgery with distinction from Glasgow Caledonian University, Scotland. Furthermore, he holds a position on the Allied Health Advancing Practice Advisory Group, reporting directly to the Victorian Department of Health and he is also a clinical educator within La Trobe University’s Podiatry department.

A student is defined as a holder of a student identification card from a recognised tertiary educational institution and must be studying full-time to qualify for the discounted rate. DFA may contact you after the registration is received to verify your full-time student status.

WHO CAN ATTEND

The Conference is open to health professionals and students (studying DFD related degrees) to attend. Our delegates operate in the clinical treatment and research domains across podiatry, nursing, endocrinology, vascular surgery, general practice, orthopaedics, pedorthics, infectious diseases and other DFD-related specialties. We provide a multi-disciplinary program to appeal to a broad range of delegates.

Are guests allowed for social events?

We have a limited capacity available for the Interactive Dinner - this is an inclusion on the 'ALL INCLUSIVE PASS'. To ensure our delegates don't miss out, guest passes are not available.

The Hyatt Regency Sydney is offering a 10% discount to DFA delegates over the conference dates. All accommodation bookings are handled directly with the hotel, they will send you a booking confirmation and please contact the hotel directly if you have any questions or wish to modify your booking.

DISCOUNT CONDITIONS

The 10% discount is offered on the 'Standard Rate' which offers very flexible booking and cancellation fees. Non-refundable rates/Member rates may display as the same price/or cheaper than the 10% discounted rate offered. These rates are subject to strict booking/cancellation or membership conditions and not subject a discount applying.
