Introducing Professor Keith Harding

Professor Keith Harding

Professor Keith Harding CBE FRCGP FRCP FRCS FLSW has had a longstanding interest in wound healing. He has undergone training in both general surgery and general practice and was appointed as the first Director of the Wound Healing Research Unit in 1991. From 2011 – 2013 he was Director of TIME Institute (Translation, Innovation, Methodology and Engagement) and Head of Wound Healing Research Unit, School of Medicine, Cardiff University and Clinical Lead for Wound Healing in the Cardiff & Vale NHS Trust. In September 2013 he was appointed as Dean of Clinical Innovation at Cardiff University and in 2014 was appointed as Medical Director of the Welsh Wound Innovation Centre.

His clinical practice is exclusively focused on treating patients with wound healing problems with a wide range of aetiologies. He holds external professorial appointments at universities in the UK and Australia. He has authored over 350 publications in the field of wound healing and has written a number of chapters and books in this area.

Keith was Chair of the International Working Group on Wound Healing in Diabetic Foot Disease, Chair of the Expert Working Group that produced a range of International Consensus Documents from 2004 – 2011. Has obtained funding of over £45 million from a range of academic, commercial and clinical sources since the Wound Healing Research Unit was created in 1991.

He was awarded the CBE in the New Year Honours list in January 2013 for Services to Medicine and Health Care. In 2013 he was awarded £4.2 million to set up the Welsh Wound Innovation Initiative part of which has enabled the setting up of the first Wound Healing Centre in the World. The centre is designed to coordinate academic activity, both in terms of teaching and research, in addition to providing a coordinated approach to the care of patients with wounds. In 2014 he was awarded the The Learned Society of Wales Fellowship.

Associate Professor Bill McGuiness

Associate Professor Bill McGuiness RN, Dip T, B Ed, MNS, PhD, FAWMA is the Director of the La Trobe University clinical school and has a clinical appointment as a wound clinical nurse consultant at Alfred Health.

His research focuses on strategies for maintaining the integument and wound management. During this time he has focused on improving patient outcomes through the use of enabling technologies and varied health care models. Projects undertaken include temperature changes during dressing change procedures and the impact on healing, Blood flow and transcutaneous oxygen levels of the heel when off-loaded with contemporary pressure ulcer prevention devices, RCT examining the influence of electrical stimulation on removing leg oedema and changes to microclimate on the pressure prone areas of patients in ICU.

Bill has been keynote speaker at a number of international conferences including the European Wound Management Conference, The New Zealand Wound management conference, The Singapore wound management conference, The Ireland wound management conference and the Malaysian Wound Management conference. He was also a visiting scholar for the Ministry of Health Singapore.

Bill is a past president of the Australian Wound Management Association and current board member of Wound Australia. He is also a member on the Victorian State Government’s Ministerial Advisory Council on Nursing and Midwifery, Australia. He was made a Fellow of the Australian Wound Management Association (AWMA) in 2014 and a life member of AWMA (Vic) in 2015.

Dr Pete Lazzarini

Dr Pete Lazzarini is Senior Research Fellow in the Foot Disease Research program at QUT and Qld Health. He was a founding member of the Australian Diabetic Foot Network, NHMRC Diabetes Update Guidelines and Queensland Diabetes Network steering committees. Pete has also been vice-president of the Australasian Podiatry Council Board and Chair of the Australasian Podiatry Conference.

He has vast experience managing large state-wide diabetes projects that have resulted in state-wide reductions in diabetes hospitalisations and amputations. For the past four years he has worked in a conjoint research role completing his PhD and building Australia’s first Foot Disease Research program with the goal of ending avoidable amputations. This has resulted in 40+ published journal papers, $900,000+ in grants, 3 higher degree research students and 4 international collaborations.
